Giving Thanks

Nov 26, 2011

I have so much to thank God for...the freedom from my sins which was purchased by the blood of Christ, my husband and children,  family and friends, church community, a country where I can worship God freely, health, home and "lots of stuff." When I rehearse in my mind all that God has blessed me with, my heart is filled and overflowing.

But, I want to be careful. Careful to remember to thank God for all that He has done for me and all that He has given me, but also careful to remember that the greatest treasure of all is God Himself! I am thankful for a God who is at the same time holy and yet relational, just and yet merciful, powerful and yet gentle, angered by sin and yet loving and compassionate. I am thankful for the "whole package" that is God: for the things of God that I understand and the (many more) things that I can't begin to comprehend. I am thankful for the things about Him that I like and the things (yes, there are those) that I don't like.

So, as we move away from our Thanksgiving holiday and head into the season of Christmas, let us remember to be grateful for and to love God for God Himself, and not just the things that He gives us.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. Ps. 9:1-2
