A Worthy Resolution

 

There is no more worthy New Year’s resolution for the believer than this one that is laid out for us in Scripture: that we understand and know the Lord, who practices steadfast love, justice and righteousness in the earth. 

And how do we know and understand the Lord? Proverbs 2:6 gives us the answer: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding…”

You see, it is from the mouth of the Lord which is the Word of God that we learn to know and understand Him! On each page of Scripture, we are being drawn into the story of God as God interacts with sinful, fallen humanity. Page after page we see God revealing His character and His nature to His people. We learn that He is “one who practices steadfast love, justice and righteousness.  Not just that He practices these things, but that these things delight Him! (Jeremiah 9:23-24) 

It is in the Scripture that we learn that the written Word of God that was sent to the Old Testament prophets is fulfilled in the Living Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was and is the Word made flesh. We see lived out in the flesh, the Word of God in His full glory. It is in the Scriptures that we see Jesus the glory of the invisible God. And it is there that we learn to know and understand Him.

To know and understand the Lord God as He is revealed to us in the Bible is the deepest longing of the believer’s heart. May 2024 be a year where we pursue the knowledge and understanding of God through the study of His Word. Let us join the Apostle Paul in counting everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord! (Philippians 3:8)
