Daily Meditations: Journey with Jesus to the Cross (Day 13)

Apr 17, 2019

Good Wednesday Morning!

Read through Mark 15:16-20. This is a difficult scene to gaze into as Jesus is mocked and humiliated by an entire battalion of Roman soldiers. Public humiliation brought on the Son of God. Crowds are jeering at Him. People spitting on Him. A crown of thorns pushed down on His head. “Hail to the King” they cry aloud, laughing at Him. No one has ever looked less like a king than this Jesus!

Despised and rejected by men, He stands their receiving their blows, hearing their laughs. Blood from the thorns trickles down his face mingling with the spittle from the Roman soldiers’ mouth. Silently He receives their abuse without a word.

And they have no idea who this really is. They have no idea who they are mocking. They have no understanding that the One who stands before them is the eternal Son of God - the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. They do not know that through this Son of God the world in which they live was created.  With the very breath He had put into their lungs they mock Him. With the very strength that He gave their bodies they beat Him.  Their Caesar, their government and the power that they had over Him all existed under the sovereign will of this God/Man.

As they shouted the words “Hail to the King,”  they had no idea that the words they were speaking were the most truthful words they had ever spoken. Intending to be ridicule, they proclaimed the truth of who this Jesus was and is.  He is indeed the King. Not just the king of the Jews...but this Man is the KING of kings and the LORD of lords. And His is an eternal kingdom. A kingdom that will not pass away.

But first His humiliation. But first His shame and disgrace. But first His cross. But first His death.

Look on Him. Behold Him. Behold Your King.
