Daily Meditations: Journey with Jesus to the Cross (Day 14)

Apr 18, 2019

It is Thursday of Holy Week. We are continuing our journey with Jesus to the Cross and we find ourselves on a hill called Golgotha outside of Jerusalem. Today we will focus our attention in Mark 15:21-32; however, to get a fuller picture of the cross let us also read Matthew 27:32-44, Luke 23:26-39 and John 19:16-27. As you read you might want to note in your journals all the different observations that each of the four gospel accounts bring to the scene of the crucifixion.

Now read Psalm 22...a psalm written by David hundreds of years before Jesus. But a psalm that clearly points to this very moment in time. And it is from this psalm that Jesus quotes with His dying breath. It is said that who you truly are on the inside is what comes out in times of crisis and in times of great suffering. What comes out of Jesus at His greatest hour of suffering? Forgiveness for those who know not what they do. Ministry to a thief and the promise of eternal life. Provision for His mother’s future. And God’s Word - the Holy Scriptures. The Living Word of God is filled with the Written Word!

High and lifted up is Jesus, hanging from a cross between two thieves. Bloody. Naked. Mocked. A laughingstock to many. Bearing the weight of humiliation and shame. A horror to look at. And Forsaken. Forsaken by God bearing the sins of many.

But those with the eyes to see - we see something entirely different. We see justice and love colliding. We see grace and mercy. We see beauty. We see glory. We see our King.

Behold your King!
