Scripture Meditation: 2 Samuel 7:12-17; Matthew 1:1; Acts 2:29-32.
Tucked in the book of 2 Samuel we find our next promise regarding the coming Messiah. The LORD is making a covenant with King David and He says, “I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” If we are not careful, we can completely miss the promise that is right before us. David’s son, Solomon, was the next king to rule in Israel. His greatest accomplishment is that he built the temple to the Lord God. But this promise was not fulfilled in Solomon. Solomon, like David, died. And if you know the history of Israel, the kingdom of Israel was split in two with the entire nation eventually coming under the authority of foreign nations. I’m sure to some of the people of Israel who lived during those years as exiles, it appeared as if God’s word had failed. The throne of David’s son was not established forever! But to others, there was the belief that God’s Word NEVER fails. They would have been looking for someone that would come that would be the offspring of David who would re-establish this kingdom.
The years of watching and waiting were not in vain! With the angelic proclamation, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord,” Jesus, the son of David, the son of Abraham (Matthew 1:1), entered into our world. Born not in a palace but in a humble manger, this offspring of David would just as the Lord God had promised that day to David, establish God’s kingdom and build a house for the Lord’s name. This house would not be made of stones, like Solomon’s temple, but of “living stones built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:4-5) The throne of the Son of David will be established forever! (More on that tomorrow.)
