Meditation Genesis 3:14-15, Galatians 4:4, Hebrews 2:14
In the beginning God made a perfect world. It was very good. There was no sin, no death, no strife. There was only beauty, peace, life. And then a snake, a woman, a tree and an all-out rebellion against the Creator ushered into this perfect world death, chaos, darkness. Why is there evil in this world? We brought it in.
But God. Right on the heels of this most tragic moment, God shows up. He calls the man and woman out of their hiding, He covers their shame by shedding the blood of an innocent animal and He makes a promise to them. One day the Seed of the Woman would crush the serpent’s head. One day He will send a Deliverer who will undo all the evil that was ushered into the world on that fateful day.
Advent began in that moment. The waiting for this mysterious seed that would come and crush the head of the serpent! Who would he be? Every child that was born, the question was asked, “could he be the one?”
But thousands of years went by. The mystery remained. The promise remained. Those who believed the God of the promise waited. They waited when all hope seemed lost.
And then one day, “when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman...” The Seed of the Woman came and He was none other than Jesus, the Son of God, and through His death He “destroyed the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil”!
Just as God promised all the way back in Genesis 3, Jesus crushed the head of the serpent that day on the cross. Already but not yet. We still await the final blow to Satan. His head is surely crushed but he’s still whipping about bringing great destruction in our world. But in Romans 6:20 Paul writes, “The God of peace WILL SOON crush Satan under your feet.” Satan’s demise is sure and the day is coming soon.
And for that day we wait with faith in the God of the promise and with great joy and anticipation!
