The Promised Messiah: Messianic King

Scripture Meditation: Psalm 2; Acts 2:29-32 (again), Hebrews 1:5; 8-9

"Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.'” (Psalm 2:1-3)

The promise began in Genesis with just a seed of the woman. And slowly over centuries the understanding of the promise of the Lord to fallen people continued to expand. The seed of the woman became the offspring of Abraham, the scepter of Judah, a prophet like Moses and yesterday we saw that he would be a son of David who would be an eternal king! In Psalm 2,  written by David about this King, we see a new hint about this coming King...He is the LORD’s Anointed. The specific word used here for anointed is used only when referring to a person anointed by oil for a special purpose and it is translated from the Hebrew to the English word Messiah. In the Greek language this same word is translated as Christos or Christ in English. The writer of Hebrews quotes from this Psalm in referring to Jesus. It is Jesus who is the LORD’s anointed, the Son of God, the Messianic King promised long ago.

Since Genesis 3 until today, the nations have raged against the LORD and His Messiah and have sought to be free from His rule and reign. While they rage, the LORD has called out from every nation a remnant of people who will surrender to this Messianic King. Blessed are those who find their refuge in Him whose throne is forever and ever and whose scepter of uprightness is the scepter of His kingdom. (Hebrews 1:8-9)
