Scripture Meditation: Genesis 49:10; Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:22-38; Philippians 2:9-11
“The scepter shall not depart from Judah nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet until tribute comes to him, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.” (Genesis 49:10)
Judah was one of the 12 sons of Jacob. And it is in the midst of Jacob’s death bed blessing of his sons that we find our next messianic promise. Through the tribe of Judah would come the line of kings that would rule over Israel. And this rule would not depart from Judah’s descendants until “tribute comes to him” or as some translations put it until “Shiloh comes.” Shiloh is a recognized name for Messiah and carries with it the connotation of peace. Now we know that the seed of a woman, who is the seed of Abraham, will come from the tribe of Judah. He will be a prince of peace who will rule and reign over the people.
All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable and here we see the value of the lists of genealogies. They help us see how this promise that dates all the way back to Genesis is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Go ahead, ladies, read Matthew 1 and Luke 3 for yourselves! Those genealogies are super important!!!
Jesus—Shiloh—has come just as the Scripture foretold. “For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:19-20a). Therefore, “God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)
