The Promised Messiah: A Prophet Like Moses (Part 2)

Dec 7, 2018

Scripture for meditation: Deuteronomy 18:15-19; John 7:16; John 12:49; Hebrews 1:1-4; 3:1-6

The writer of Hebrews tells us that “God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son!”(Hebrews 1:1) This One that Moses spoke of was not just another prophet who God would speak through, but He was someone much much greater. He was the only begotten Son of God, the Living Word, that came into the world.

On a mountain, Jesus, along with Peter, James, and John, are praying. Enter Elijah and Moses to this prayer meeting! Peter, James and John fall on their faces, terrified as a cloud descends on the mountain and a voice from the cloud says, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to Him!” Are you seeing the fulfillment? Moses the prophet had spoken of the Prophet who would one day come and here he is standing with the very One of whom he spoke that day on the mountain!

So what is the message that was spoken from the mountain these two times? “...Listen to Him!”

Jesus said in John 12:49-50: “For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
Again, what is the message from the Father that was forewarned by Moses and God that we are to listen to? Look back to vs. 44-48: “whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.”
