Giving Thanks - God Self-Existing & Sulf-Sufficient

Verses to Meditate on: Acts 17:24-25; Rev. 1:8, Psalm 90:2, John 1:4-5

The God of the Bible reveals Himself as the uncreated One who was and is and is to come. He is not a god made by human hands nor is He a god who has need of anything. He exists in and of Himself and in and of Himself He is self-sufficient.

Periodically I hear someone explain that God created because He was lonely. This would imply then that God was in someway lacking. As if He had some sort of human-sized hole in His heart that He needed us to fill. But (thankfully)  the Bible teaches quite the opposite. The Triune God revealed in Scripture has perfect unity, love, and community in and of themselves. They did not create in order to fill a need in them, but rather created out of the overflow of their perfect and infinite love. 

Why is it important for us to understand that our eternal, uncreated God has need of nothing? Because if God created us to fill some sort of lack in Him, He would cease to be God and we would be crushed by attempting to fill this lack. It would be impossible and we would be destroyed.

However, knowing that God is self-sufficient is good news for needy people! We can come to Him to have our needs met. In fact, God calls us to Himself because He is the One that we need. We are the ones with the God-sized holes in our hearts constantly seeking to fill it with other things. He calls us to Himself not to fill a need in Him, but so that He can fill this need in us! 

 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Eph. 3:16-19)


Give thanks today to the God who is self-existent and self-sustaining and who generously meets our deepest needs with Himself!
