Giving Thanks for the Giver of Gifts: God Our Deliverer & Our Refuge

Nov 21, 2018

The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer. God is the God who rescues and saves His children. Not only is He our deliverer but He is also our refuge. He is the place of safety and protection for His children!

In the book of Exodus we see a picture of a great deliverance. In the story of Moses and the people of Israel, Moses was sent by God into Egypt to deliver the people of Israel out of slavery. And so he went, brought the people out of Egypt (with a fair bit of drama) and delivered them across the Red Sea into the wilderness to the foot of Mount Sinai where they, for the first time, “met with God.” Moses as deliverer points us to the greater deliverer that we have in Jesus Christ!

He, through His sacrifice on the cross,  has delivered us out of condemnation for our sin, out of slavery to our sin, out of the shame of our sin. But He is not just our deliverer. He is also our place of refuge. He doesn’t deliver us out of bondage to sin and bring us to a place of safety and security; rather He IS the place of safety and security. He is the One to whom we are delivered. Our lives are hidden with Christ in God. Protected. Secure. For all eternity.

“Trust in Him at all times; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:8)

Some passages to meditate on today: Psalm 18:1-2; Psalm 27:5; Psalm 62:1-8; Proverbs 14:26
