Giving Thanks for the Giver of Gifts: God Most Sovereign

Nov 6, 2018

It’s Tuesday - Election Day 2018. In light of that - today the attribute of God I would like us to focus on is God’s Sovereignty. Regardless of the outcome of any election - God remains Sovereign and in control of all things!

Some passages of Scripture that will help us focus on our Sovereign God:

His Sovereignty over suffering: Job 1:6-12
His Sovereignty over government - Romans 13:1-3
His Sovereignty over peoples and nations - Acts 17:26
His Sovereignty over mankind -Prov. 16;9 Ps. 37:23
His Sovereignty over creation - Psalm 135:6

That God is Sovereign in its simplest form means that He has absolute authority and unrestricted supremacy over His creation. He does everything according to His plan and pleasure. He controls all things.  In other words, nothing that happens happens outside of God’s rule and reign.

This can be a terrifying truth or a comforting truth, depending on who is reading this.  Terrifying if you don’t know how infinitely holy-perfect-sinless God is. If you don’t know the goodness of God, the fact that something this powerful has this much control over all things would be utterly devastating.

But for those who love God - for those who know Him personally - they see the Sovereign rule and reign of God as a thing of hope and a comfort in the midst of suffering. Especially in the midst of suffering.

Romans 8:28 helps us understand how we can see God’s Sovereignty as good and entrust ourselves to Him. “And we know that for those who love God ALL THINGS work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” God uses His Sovereignty to work all things (good, bad, ugly) for the good of those who love Him and for His purpose.

God’s Sovereignty is permeated with his holiness which means that on days like today - we don’t need to be anxious. It means that we don’t need to fear the future - because God will always be in control - He will always be Sovereign. It means we don’t need to fear suffering - because God’s Sovereignty will work ALL things for our good and for His glory.

God’s Sovereignty means that we, His children, can humble ourselves under His mighty hand,  entrust ourselves to Him. We can cast all our cares on Him, knowing that He cares for us.

Let us give thanks today that it is the Sovereign God that is the one who is on the throne and that all others sit under His rule and reign!
